Summer Camp is Lots of Fun and Learning at Crescendo Training Centre

Summer camp is once again a very fond memory for the kids that participated in the Horsemasters Summer Camps at Crescendo Training Centre, LLC in July and August.  Children from as far away as Michigan, West Virginia and Maryland participated in the summer camps.

The Horsemasters curriculum helps the campers to be very knowledgeable horsepersons, while the riding and showmanship lessons and competition assist with the actual riding and handling of horses.  The campers also enjoy daily crafts, treasure hunts and games.

July's camp boasted quite a few promotions in the Horsemasters Program, as well at the winners of the "best of" awards.  Brook Brown of Brenigsville was the Most Improved Equestrian.  Brenna Brown of Brenigsville, PA was the Best leg wrapper, Matthew Filleti of Dundalk, MD was the Best Stall Cleaner.  Winners of the Camp Horse Show, Class 1 Showmanship--                          , Class 2 Showmanship-

August camp winners were:  Bailey Young of Elkins, WV was the Most Improved Equestrian, Ariel Phelps of Ludington, MI was the Best leg wrapper and Chandler Colyer of Marietta, PA was the Best Stall Cleaner.  Winners of the Camp Horse Show, Class 1-Showmanship-Samantha Garvey of Lancaster, PA, Class 2-Showmanship, Bailey Young of Elkins, WV, Class 3--Hunt Seat Equitation--Shawna Hillman of Ludington, MI.

Camp counselors were Judy Rutt of Denver, PA and Jillian Schaffer of Sinking Spring, PA.  Campers were treated to learning about horse shoeing and trimming with Mike Vannoy Farrier Services of Brogue, PA, horse dentistry with Scott Koelher Equine Dentistry of Glen Rock, PA, Horse Photography with Carien Schippers of Equine Photography of    NY, Sports Massage Therapy with Happy Mare Therapist, Cindy McVey of Lancaster, PA.  Resident Trainer and USEF "R" Licensed Judge Kriss Phelps served as the Judge for the horse shows, along with giving the kids feedback and suggestions on their Showmanship and Riding skills.

The children went home with a craft from each day, a completed Horsemasters book, awards and a great memory for their scrapbook.  Many have already committed to come back next year for more fun, games and learning!

SE District PAHA Judged Pleasure/Poker Ride and Wiener Roast

SE District held their annual Judged Pleasure Ride again this year on November 1, 2009.  However, it was done a little differently in that we added a Poker Ride along with the judged portion, and at the end of the ride we had a whopping, delicious wiener roast, which also included roasting marshmallows, making s’mores, and drinking fresh apple cider.

The day started out quite iffy due to another ride being held at the same site; only this was no ordinary ride…..it was a “Quail Hunt - Bird Dog Trials” with riders galloping across opens fields, shooting (blanks) guns, whooping and yelling to beat the band and dogs flying everywhere.  Our organization was unaware that this was booked on the same day as our ride!  We had to do some recalculating in order to protect riders and horses that had never been in these types of situations, so we had to cut out some of the ‘already marked’ trails and detour them going out and coming in!  Well, it worked and the “quail hunters’ were gracious enough to hold their riders for one hour until we could get our district out the start!

The weather was so undecided, but still 18 of our_ 23 registered riders came to brave the elements.  We had no rain at all, even though the day started out cloudy and unsure, but by the end of the ride all turned out wonderful with a bit of sun peeking through, no one going off, getting lost, or getting hurt.  There were 5 obstacles to encounter with judges at each of the obstacles.  Each judge gave a playing card at each obstacle and judged the horse through each obstacle, as well.  At the end of the ride, the riders were given two more cards for a best 5 out of 7 cards to determine the winner(s).  The jackpot for 1st place was $120.00! - awarded to Kristy McGill, and 2nd place of $60.00 - awarded to Shelly Rahe.  Both had hands of 4-of-a-kind!  Congratulations to both of these women for their lucky draws.

Our many, many thanks go out to our Volunteers, for without them we could not put on this ride:

Leslie Freeman – Judge

David Conner – Judge

Natasha Blymeir – Judge

Joelle Muscolino – Judge

Ed Evans – Road Crosser

Mark and Cody Williams – Fire Coordinators

Jan Williams – Judge, Trail Coordinator
